Description
When using the new VSCode extension, the mode switching experience is lacking compared to previous behavior. Specifically:
-
Nicer mode switch prompting — Previously there was a smoother, more intuitive way to prompt the user to switch modes (e.g., from Ask to Code mode). Currently, when a user asks the agent to switch modes and implement something, the agent redundantly asks "do you want to switch to code mode and implement this?" instead of just popping up a prompt that the user can agree to.
-
Auto-switch capability — The ability to automatically switch modes based on context (e.g., auto-switching from Ask/Plan mode to Code mode when implementation is requested) should be a supported permission.
Context
- Reported in Slack #new-vscode-feedback thread
- Related PR for planning suggestions: fix(plan): Show implementation suggestions only when LLM has all the information #6240
- Current behavior: user in Ask mode asks to implement something → agent asks confirmation to switch instead of auto-switching or smoothly transitioning
