(question) NotEnoughSpace error writing MIDI to port and 'harhar' error message

When writing a MIDI event (specifically an AllNotesOff event) to a MidiWriter I got the error NotEnoughSpace and the error message 'harhar'.
what???

what's actually going on and how do I fix this??
please tell me what information you need and maybe make the error message more useful?

I solved the problem, though I'm not sure why it works like this. the time field of the RawMidi has to be 0.

Can someone reply w/ an explanation so I can understand how this works a bit better?

• Removed harhar from the error message. This code runs if the process callback has panicked. My guess is you called unwrap on MidiWriter::.write, which I guess is fine if you want to crash the program when a midi write event fails.
• The error is translated directly from C Jack's ENOBUFS error at https://jackaudio.org/api/group__MIDIAPI.html#gaa25503c07ac3c2ed62d79be9c25d42ed. Can you confirm you meet all the prerequisites like having enough space and sorting all the events before calling write? Midi writer provides a few utilities to check the size https://docs.rs/jack/latest/jack/struct.MidiWriter.html.
  • Are you able to provide information of what version of JACK you are using? Is this JACK1, JACK2, or Pipewire?
  • Is the log crate enabled? If not, you can redirect JACK to use stdio logging with https://docs.rs/jack/latest/jack/fn.set_logger.html

We can probably improve the error message though. Maybe one of:

• Return a custom error that explains all the prerequisites.
• Possibly check (if little to no performance penalty) some of the prerequisites.
