# Special and Sick Leave

## Special Leave
Special leave can refer to paid or unpaid tume off granted to an employee outisde the framework of Annual leave, and parental leave.
Examples of special leave include:
- bereavements
- domestic emergencies
- childcare emergencies
- jury service
- [linked here](https://mathison.turing.ac.uk/page/2258)

To request special leave in ERPx, you have to go via the Absences tab to put a request through. There is a dropdown menu to select the appropriate type of special leave, then you choose the desired dates. Once submitted, your request will be sent for approval to the person that manages your leave. The employee can request either paid or unpaid leave.

> **Note:** This used to be a form that required details of the need for special leave, as well as the employee annual leave balance and any special leave the employee has taken in the preceeding twelve months. Adding this detail may be useful.

## Sickness
Details of the sickness policy are [linked here](https://mathison.turing.ac.uk/page/2227). It details the processes of reporting sick on the first day of an illness (contact your line manager theoretically by email and before 9:30 ideally - TODO point out REG-specific guidance?). What to do if sickness persists for more than 7 consecutive days, and options if you fall ill during annual leave.
The sickness policy also describes processes for medical appointments, occupational health processes, and sick pay.

There are statatory requirements from the Government which need to be met for employees to be entitled to Statatory Sick Pay (SSP) and the sickness policy also outlines the Institute's occupational sick pay for employees.

## Parental Leave
The Institute's Maternity, Adoption, Maternity Support (Paternity) and Parental Leave Policy documents are [found here in Mathison](https://mathison.turing.ac.uk/page/2226). The documents outline the processes primarily when an employee is about to become a parent, but also includes information on parential leave. They also include a risk assessment form to be filled in by pregnant employees.

For parents expecting a newborn baby a MATB1 form is usually required. This is provided by the midwife to the expecting parent around the 20th week of pregnancy, but may need to be requested.

The policy outlines:
