Correct gaps, expand documentation

As raised by @d33bs in #60 (review) and #60 (comment), there are a few undocumented features and arguments/class attributes that should be addressed either in docstrings and/or additional documentation. I could imagine the comment about pytest --runcost being addressed in a developer guide, for example.
