Proposal: track time evolution with branches and/or releases

I'm not sure how to deal with dates. For now I am just thinking about live systems.

How about either making a new branch for a new time based snapshot or tagging the repo and making a release ?

Would it make sense to track the Top500 June and November releases?

Seems like a good idea although I think we need a bit more data. Any ideas on how to encourage more people to contribute?
