Using local user password?

What is the reason that the simple authentication method doesn't use local Linux user password? Is it because of plain password transmission or something? I want offer the same way that users login when rstudio is installed directly on to host machine: they can login with local linux user and password.
Logging in with AD user may be more complicated, but we will come to that later.
