Stable version of opentelemetry-exporter-prometheus

Hi @jack-berg, @bogdandrutu, @jkwatson, @trask, I was checking the maven repository to find out a stable version of opentelemetry-exporter-prometheus and I see that all the versions are alpha. Is there a stable release version for opentelemetry-exporter-prometheus that I can use in my project? Or is there other dependency which has the PrometheusMetricReader

@jack-berg I don't remember why we haven't marked the prometheus exporter module stable yet. Is there a good reason to hold off doing that?

The Prometheus exporter spec is still experimental 😕

Thank you. Is there a timeline when a stable version be released? Or is there any other Library which I can use?

For a timeline, you'd need to check with the prometheus SIG. They are the ones who are driving the prometheus exporter specification, which opentelemetry-java is dependent on.

I would recommend looking at enabling OTLP support directly in your prometheus instance and using our stable OTLP exporters (opentelemetry-exporter-otlp) in opentelemetry-java.

Hi @jack-berg, thank you for the reply. Just curious to know why just the Prometheus exporter is in experimental phase and not the other exporters? Are there any complications exporting the Metrics via Prometheus? Or is the Otel2PrometheusConverter has the complicated conversion from otel to Prometheus?

while the specification for the other exporters are marked as Stable.

here's the tracking issue in the specification for what remains to be done at the specification level before it can be marked stable: open-telemetry/opentelemetry-specification#3737
