Can't build recovery installer debian stretch

New debian 9 stretch virtual machine with proxmox, attempting to build the recover iso I get this:

Grub is version 2.02 with debian stretch, is that the issue?

Your local grub version shouldn't matter as ONIE is building grub from source. I know this issue is old (ish) but I can say I have built that specific version recently (inside debian 11 container) and didn't hit any patching issue.

One thing that can sometimes throw patching off is if the line endings get messed up. Are you perhaps using a shared mount with a windows environment?
