Sphinx Community Call (Autumn 2025)

Last year @chrisjsewell hosted an online meet-up (#12443). It's been a while since then, so I'm proposing having another call at the end of the month, on Wednesday 26 November 2025 at 8 pm GMT.

Please add a comment or a 'thumbs up' reaction if you can make it!

The call isn't intended to be formal in any sense, more general chat or discussion relating to development of Sphinx. I imagine that discussion topics would relate to Sphinx core / themes / extensions integrations, but there are no real restrictions here.

It has been noted that the following day (Thu 27 Nov 2025) is Thanksgiving in the states. If this is likely to cause issues for anyone, please do say earlier rather than later. It might be possible to reschedule but obviously I'd prefer to avoid doing so if at all possible.

My schedule is pretty flexible. I'm open to other times if we can get better attendance at some other time. The planned time works fine for me (I believe it's 12:00 for me here in San Francisco).

I missed the community call, but I am interested in your thoughts about Sphinx & Bazel.
Besides the standard way of calling Sphinx in Bazel, I am interested in a file based selection methodology. I'm using Sphinx as an integrated requirement management solution with Sphinx-Needs. For this purpose I've build a proof-of-concept how this could look like: https://github.com/useblocks/bazel-drives-sphinx

Not sure whether that relates to what you do with Sphinx & Bazel. If it does, maybe we can organize an exchange.

What's new on my side in the last year? I spent it mostly with

• improved https://snippets.documatt.com, a reStructuredText preview, with sharing via link, adding MyST Markdown, and running Sphinx entirely in a browser
• gained a lot experience in creating custom Sphinx themes
• continued maintaining https://github.com/documatt/sphinx-reredirects
• created a "modern" Sphinx template https://github.com/documatt/sphinx-doc-template

I will put the date on my calendar, but I doubt I can make it as I also have some parental obligations.

As this group is often interested on docs, I'm part of some discussions with respect to free-threaded python, and in particular how we want to documents multi-threading guaranties and gotchas across the ecosystem in a uniform way. If some of you have some thoughts.

As a side notes, I've been recently maintaining https://pypi.org/project/intersphinx-registry/ which try to collect in a single place intersphinx url mapping to make it simpler to update all the ecosystem when a project moves. To that end - and I haven't investigated how to do that – it would be great sometime to be able to resolve update the URL after html has been produced, like attaching data-intersphinx='<identifier>', so it's easy to patch docs after the facts and not rebuild a full project that is several month/year old.

As I also completely disconnected from github/python for 6 month I'm not sure if the 2025 sphinx survey went somewhere, we could try to make it in 2026; and it would be nice to not try to make it perfect, but run it and iterate – that's the point in trying to have a survey defined in a file we can accept PR to and duplicate/modify :-)

Great meeting! I wonder if we have these on a more frequent basis, if each meeting could have a specific primary focus (search, theming, etc) for at least part of the duration of the meeting (that way there is still room for general discussion).
