Upon upgrading to latest stable release (2025.12.0-167) from November stable release (2025.11.0-234), the Extension Host appears to be crashing repeatedly (more than 3x within 10 seconds of starting Positron 2025.12.0-167), such that the IDE asks if I want to start extension bisect to find problem extension. At this point, neither R or Py consoles works.

I followed the instructions to completely reset any settings that I have, so there is no residuals of any extensions, other than the ones pre-installed with Positron. I can get into Positron without error.

However, as soon as I enable positron assistant, and restart the IDE, the repeated crashing of Extension host re-appears. Disabling positron assistance, appears to stop the repeated crashing.

I then downgraded from 2025.12.0-167 back to the Nov release (2025.11.0-234), I have since been able to enable positron assistant (in 2025.11.0-234) without any crashes of the extension host.

Appears to be Dec release, with its positron assistant that's causing all the problems.

Steps to reproduce the issue:

1. Enable positron assistant in 2025.12.0-167 --> crash extension host.
2. Disable positron assistant in 2025.12.0-167 --> crash no more.
3. Downgrade to Positron 2025.11.0-234, and enable positron assistant --> no crash.

Expected or desired behavior:

Don't crash extension host.

Were there any error messages in the UI, Output panel, or Developer Tools console?

Same situation here. Although in my case it happens in the following two situations:

1. Situation: After starting a chat with Positron Assistant and interacting with it. Cause of crashing: If, after a request, Positron Assistant starts searching in codebases, everything freezes. This has happened to me with Quarto files, and it seems that when I select a part of the file, it enters as context. This situation precedes the following one.
2. Positron Assistant always starts with the last open chat session. If in the first situation it crashes due to the search in codebases, then it will return there and freeze again. The only way is to either reset Positron or wait for the small windows in which it comes out of the freeze to click on the “+” button for a new session.

I am seeing the same behavior on MacOS as well - this is after deleting ~/.positron and ~/Library/Application\ Support/Positron/, no additional extensions installed and the only change made is enabling Positron Assistant and restarting the application.

It may or may not be relevant but I was also seeing the GitLens extension causing similar errors (this was detected via the bisect tool when Assistant was not enabled).

We haven't yet been able to reproduce the issue on Windows nor Mac, with various providers and enabling/disabling GitLens. FWIW, I see the same copilot extension errors in my Extension Host logs, though I do not experience the extension host crashing issue.

• Which providers are you logged in with: GitHub Copilot, Anthropic, others?
• Does this happen in a window with no workspace, or only when a folder is open in Positron?
• Does this still happen if you disable the GitHub Copilot extension?
• Does this still happen if you disable the Pyrefly extension?

To disable the above extensions:

1. Run command Extensions: Focus on Extensions View to open the Extensions view
2. Search for @builtin copilot or pyrefly
3. Click the gear icon on the extension entry and click "Disable"

@brianmsm, some questions for you:

• What version of Positron are you running -- is it also 2025.12.0 build 167?
• Can you share a bit more about what you see in Chat?
  • Are you using GitHub Copilot in chat? Do you have access to an Anthropic API key to use with Positron Assistant chat?
  • Which model are you using?
• Does this issue only happen when codebases is invoked in chat, or do you see the extension host repeatedly crash on startup? If only with codebases, I wonder if you may be experiencing a different root issue, though with a similar freezing/crashing outcome.

  I've only used GitHub Copilot, this crash happens before I reauthenticate with Copilot (although something may be lingering from previous configs)

  Yes - no workspace or folder open

• Does this still happen if you disable the GitHub Copilot extension?

  This seems to prevent the crash from happening once disabled

• Does this still happen if you disable the Pyrefly extension?

  @builtin pyrefly does not show anything in my extensions pane.

FYI @rundel and others, the Pyrefly extension is not built in but rather bootstrap installed. You would disable it the way you would for any extension that you had installed yourself:

Thanks @juliasilge and @sharon-wang for the suggestions. I pretty much have the same experience as @rundel , which is:
crash takes place pre-auth of any AI model provider.
disable GitHub Copilot extension = no crash.
disable Pyrefly = no effect on whether crashes or not on enablement of Posit Assistant.

Thanks @juliasilge - I am seeing the same behavior with pyrefly enabled or disabled.

One new data point, not sure if it is related, but as of last night Posit Publisher (pre-release v1.27.4) was also now crashing my extension host when I have a folder open. If I just create a new window without opening a folder the crash does not occur. Rolling back to the release version (v1.26) or the previous pre-release (v1.27.3) does not have this issue.

I just tried it again this evening with the latest patch release (2025.12.1 build 4) , here are what I found. With this I started new, all settings cleared in accordance with this article.

I tried 2 flows (with setting reset in-between each).

Flow 1:

1. Start positron, enable Posit Assistant from settings.
2. Restart positron.
3. Ext host enters crash cycle (i.e. ARK crashes, extension bisect, etc...).

Flow 2:

1. Start positron, disable the Github Copilot Chat in the built-in extensions.
2. Enable Posit Assistant from settings.
3. Restart positron.
4. Auth with Github Copilot successfully.
5. Chat window does not show any models in the model dropdown. Chat window useless. No crashes thus far.
6. Go back to built-in extensions and enable Github Copilot Chat, crash cycle starts.

Something is interacting poorly with the Github Copilot Chat extension.

Are you using a GitHub Education account, a personal account or an enterprise/org account to access Copilot?

Github account used for testing was personal account.
