Does this make sense? It definetly would make sense for people who get involved like
• People that comment
• People that might be registered users like discussion partners, students etc.

Let's think about a interface with the NewsletterPlugin that would make such a service easy to implement and further stress Rapila's key feature seamless integration!

I know that many journals have an RSS feed for comments on a specific
entry. i think we could add something like that. Most E-Mail programs can
subscribe to RSS and have the enteies be displayed like e-mail messages
(Apple’s Mail.app, however, lost that ability with mountain lion).

When I comment a journal entry it would be nice to have a checkbox for being notified of further comments to the same journal entry.

I still think a comments feed is the way to go for this. You can send the feed through IFTTT to do further actions like send e-mails, SMS or push notifications. It’s worth considering, though, to introduce an RSS feed that’s given the (hashed?) e-mail address of a commenter as an parameter and would then automatically include all the comments on entries on which this commenter is a participant. That way you won’t have to subscribe to the comment feed of every single entry that you comment on.
