Additional Characters

I am trying to use this software as intended. However, how would I go about adding additional characters? I want the software to handwrite an email address for example and the '@' character is not in the list of valid characters.

@mborish thanks for trying out TypeScribe.

At the moment, TypeScribe uses a pre-trained model which has a smaller character set. Adding extra characters requires training the model on a larger dataset. To quote the original model's author:

To train the model, run rnn.py. This takes a couple days on a single Tesla K80.

While this is on my list of features to add to TypeScribe, I do not have the hardware required to train a new model. If you'd like to, feel free to give it a try!

Model Training Instructions

In order to train a model, data must be downloaded and placed in this directory.

Follow the download instructions here http://www.fki.inf.unibe.ch/databases/iam-on-line-handwriting-database.

Only a subset of the downloaded data is required. Move the relevant download data so the directory structure is as folllows:

data/
│── raw/
│ ├── ascii/
│ ├── lineStrokes/
│ ├── original/
│ blacklist.npy

Once this is completed, run prepare_data.py extract the data and dump it to numpy files.
