Cathode Progress Report - January 2024

This is part of a series of progress reports that are posted with a monthly-ish cadence when there's notable progress made on the project.

v0.11.1 Release

The v0.11.1 release saw a little bit of everything - housekeeping, bug fixing, optimization, and some feature work:

• We now require .NET 8 (net8.0).
• We bumped dependencies to their latest stable versions: Microsoft.Extensions.Hosting and Microsoft.Extensions.Hosting.Systemd (8.0.0), System.IO.Pipelines (8.0.0), and Wcwidth (2.0.0).
  • The Wcwidth bump brings Unicode 15.1 support to MonospaceWidth.
• We dropped support for the Windows console host as Windows Terminal is now the default for Windows 11 22H2+.
  • This, plus Windows Terminal recently getting proper UTF-8 input support, allowed us to drop the UTF-16 input workaround for Windows.
• We applied [DisableRuntimeMarshalling] to Vezel.Cathode.
• We applied more ValueTask pooling optimizations throughout Vezel.Cathode.
• We switched APIs to using System.Drawing.Size and System.Drawing.Color to represent these concepts.
  • This resulted in removal of the TerminalSize type.
• We added overloads for char[]?, string?, and byte[]? to the set of output-related methods in the terminal I/O APIs.
  • This resolves a quirk of C# where the compiler will prefer the generic overload over an overload that requires an implicit cast (e.g. ReadOnlySpan<char> for string?).
• We shipped the fix for the unexpected InvalidOperationException coming from ChildProcess.Kill(bool) (mentioned previously in Cathode Progress Report - March 2023 #116).
• We added support for some extra control sequences.
  • OSC 7 allows a shell to report its current directory to the terminal using a file:// URI.
  • OSC 9 ; 9 does the same, but using a normal file system path, thus making it work better on Windows.
  • OSC 133 sequences allow a shell to report its prompt contents, command output, and command exit code to the terminal.

Future Plans

As we continue the work towards v1.0, these are the planned features:

In the longer term, these are the planned features for v2.0:

• Provide a Readline-like library  #11
• Provide a simplified terminal capability API #25
• Provide a command line option parser package #33
• Provide convenient APIs for piping between child processes #75
• Support rectangular area sequences (DECFRA, DECERA, etc) #101

All other features are attached to the Future milestone, which basically just means they haven't been included in the working set for a particular version yet.
