I'm filing this for discussion. This patch is a massive performance improvement over 3.0.0. Given a data set that takes 100 seconds on 3.0.0, it will only take 23 seconds when using this patch.
This does not yet have fixes for the tests; they have numerous failures due to missing classes or modules.
