Allow reconfiguring tabs dynamically

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Currently the tab config is not re read and reconfigured. I hacked it in via IDs and some tweaks in a fork for the segmented view, but it's buggy. I'd like to be able to rename tabs, add/remove (or toggle visibility on) tabs, in particular for the segmented style.

Hey @aehlke . Could you please propose the changes, forking the main branch. I would gladly review and merge if it works and keeps backward compatibility.
