The incorrect version was breaking the install of the xorg packages

I think your way of fixing the problem could be done in a better way. Right now, you are increasing the priority of the package over another package with the same name, but a newer library.
As an alternative, I would recommend to rename the library package into something like
libxfont1.5
and make sure it does not conflict with the orignal package
libxfont1.
The benefit would be that other applications, which depend on the newer libxfont1 will get their expected fucntionality from libxfont1 and the older software needed for EMGD will use libxfont1.5 to avoid conflicts with the proprietary blobs.

Have you tried to go this way already maybe? 😉
